Do I need to stop eating carbs to lose weight?

The popular idea that “carbs are bad” and that “carbs result in immense weight gain” has left many people questioning its role and importance in our diet. Some people have even avoided carbs overall rather than cutting down on the amounts. What we seem to overlook is that they have several benefits and our body needs them to survive!

For starters , carbs are your body’s main source of energy!

The way this happens is that carbohydrates are broken down into glucose before being absorbed, which provides your body with energy. However when there is too much glucose, it can be converted to glycogen which is converted to fat. In that case, carbs would lead to an increase in your body fat.

It's all about the type of carbs you eat

There are three different types of carbs found in foods. First off, there’s sugar which can be found in biscuits and fizzy drinks as well as natural sugar that can be found in fruits and honey. Another type of carbs is starch which comes from plants such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta. Lastly, fibre which is a type of carbs that can be found in fruits, vegetables, beans and lentils.

What you should do is avoid sugar as much as possible and resort to foods with starch and fiber which would provide you with the energy you need and reduce the number of calories in your diet.

So how can we benefit from carbs without gaining fat?

As it's now clear to all, carbs are an essential part of our diet. The key to not allowing carbs to turn to fat is to get your carbs intake from healthy sources such as starchy high fiber foods like legumes, vegetables, and fruits. Reducing carbohydrates in the long term can result in your body not getting enough nutrients which would lead to other damaging effects.

Other than fruits, vegetables and legumes, there are plenty of high fiber foods that you can resort to such as goji berries, protein kex as well as other healthy snacks and superfoods that you can find in our store.
